Summary
- Whitebeard and Big Mom: Both could have defeated Kaido during their earlier pirate years, with Whitebeard's destructive power and Big Mom's immense strength and Devil Fruit abilities.
- Garp, Kong, and Sengoku: These legendary Marines, with their unparalleled strength and strategic minds, likely handed Kaido some of his early defeats.
- Shanks and Roger: Shanks' mastery of Haki and swordsmanship, along with Roger's legendary fighting skills, make them strong contenders who could have defeated Kaido during his rise in the New World.
Kaido, the “Strongest Creature in the World,” has solidified his position as one of the most powerful characters in One Piece. Overwhelming strength and near-invincible durability are the two main characteristics that make Kaido one of the feared Yonko in the New World. However, despite his almost unbreakable exterior, Kaido has been defeated seven times throughout his pirate career, a fact that raises the intriguing question: who were the individuals powerful enough to take down the mighty Kaido?
1. Whitebeard - Gura Gura no Mi
Edward Newgate, or Whitebeard, was one of the greatest pirates ever to have set sail across the seas. His powers with the Gura Gura no Mi a Devil Fruit that has the power to shake the earth enabled him to create shockwaves capable of destroying the world itself. Raw physical strength combined with mastery over his Murakumogiri weapon made him one of the most dangerous combatants in the One Piece world.

The possibility that Kaido is one of the Four Emperors explains the numerous confrontations he must have had with Whitebeard during his rule. Moreover, with his powers of the Devil Fruit and destructive attacks, Whitebeard would be a plain and evident threat to Kaido. Given their shared history of having been at the top of the pirate world, Whitebeard probably gave Kaido at least one of his seven defeats, especially since they had a lot of battles with each other as they rose to power. Perhaps, Whitebeard won when Kaido was still young and reckless, and not as cold-blooded as the Yonko we know. Their fights might have played a crucial role in defining how Kaido perceives true power and motivation to become nearly invincible.
2. Big Mom - Queen of the Sea
Charlotte Linlin, also known as Big Mom, is the other one of the Four Emperors who could have even beaten Kaido. With her enormous strength, destructive abilities, and control over Prometheus, Zeus, and Napoleon, Big Mom is the strongest force that can defeat nearly anyone in the One Piece world. Her tremendous size and power over her Devil Fruit, Soru Soru no Mi, provide her with a strategic advantage over most individuals.

Big Mom and Kaido are complex in regards to their relationship. They have been allies but also clashed with each other in the past. Big Mom’s enormous strength and her tremendous durability suggest that she might have defeated Kaido if the two had battled each other a few years back, perhaps when both were competing for control of the New World. Given their past, Big Mom can easily be believed to have handed Kaido at least one of the defeats, probably in the early piracy days when both were trying to lay their marks.
3. Garp, Kong, and Sengoku - The Marine Legends
Marines have never been absent in One Piece. Amongst the legendary ones, three of them have held reign over the seas – Monkey D. Garp, Kong, and Sengoku; those would be some prime candidates to bring down Kaido at his peak. Garp is known as a Marine hero with unparalleled strength and fight capabilities; in fact, during his peak he would have likely clashed with Kaido dozens of times, so that mythic status speaks for itself in being a worthy candidate for the feat of besting Kaido at least once.

Kong, an ex-Fleet Admiral and a man who has led the whole Marine organization at the time of Edd War, also holds the power to challenge Kaido. Due to his incredible knowledge of seas and massive power, Kong can be seen to be one such person who played a vital role in the early defeats of Kaido years ago. Another character is Sengoku. He was a former Fleet Admiral and a strategy leader. He could have easily approached a pirate as powerful as Kaido for a fight. Sengoku had fought many of the most powerful forces including the Whitebeard Pirates and would have certainly been able to handle Kaido. This trio of marine legends could, therefore, have been responsible for two of the seven defeats suffered by Kaido, which were probably within his early pirate years.
4. Shanks - Master Swordsman and Haki Master
Shanks is one of the most powerful and revered Yonko. He is said to be a master swordsman and Haki expert. A lot about his powers remains unrevealed, but that he is the rival of Mihawk, who is said to be the strongest swordsman in the world, is proof enough of his power. His Haki control is considered one of the best in the world, which makes him a perfect match for Kaido.

It is very much within the realm of possibility that they did meet and cross paths sometime during their careers when both of these men were rising through the ranks within the New World. The confrontation with Mihawk does establish that Shanks’s swordsmanship, accompanied by his application of Haki, would most likely have given him an edge in a fight with Kaido. This might have happened to Shanks because he might have given one of his defeats to Kaido, considering the fact that when Kaido was just beginning to rise to the ranks of Yonko, it was their meeting. The win for Shanks would have ensured that he proved to be the master of Haki and that no one in the world could outdo him in sword-fighting.
5. Gol D. Roger - The Pirate King
Gol D. Roger is, no doubt, the strongest character to ever be produced in the world of One Piece. Legendary Pirates in their own right, the Roger Pirates, the strength was supposed to be so colossal that even the Marines could hardly handle him. It would not be out of place if Roger had contributed toward Kaido’s defeat, especially during the early periods when Kaido was still part of Rox Pirates.

Roger’s fighting power and knowledge of the True History of the world would have put him at par with Kaido. While it is unclear if they ever had a one-on-one battle, Pirate King Roger’s strength and experience would have placed him among the few who could get Kaido in his place. In case they fought each other, then the victory would have been a historic moment for the seas.
The seven defeats of Kaido mean that even the “Strongest Creature in the World” is not invincible; figures like Whitebeard, Big Mom, Garp, Kong, Sengoku, Shanks, and Roger had individual powers, experiences, and skills to challenge Kaido in his pirate career at different stages. They are the strongest people in the world of One Piece, and these potential victories against Kaido prove that there is a great complexity and an evolving relationship between the strongest figures of the series.
