Roger was also a great fighter, a man whose strength was as great or perhaps even greater than some of the most powerful individuals in One Piece such as Monkey D. Garp or Whitebeard. He was using a great sword named Ace and he had full mastery of Haki, Conqueror’s Haki in particular. He was feared by most of the pirates who are all the Emperors of the Sea in the current timeline, Kaido, Big Mom etc.
The Will of D
As with other major characters, they have the mysterious ”D.” in their surname; Roger specifically represented a bond with a people possessing a definite, unshakeable will known as the Will of D.

The Pirate King
Roger and his crew are the only supposed pirates in one piece to have made it to Laugh Tale, the last island on the Grand Line. When Roger found out the One Piece the legendary treasure left to be found by the ancient civilisation, he laughed. Achieving this feat made him the most superior pirate in history.

Rising a Great Pirate Era
"My wealth and treasure? It can be yours if you want it! Search for it! I left everything in that one place."
Roger’s title was not only about his feats but the impact he made on the Pirate world is commendable as the embodiment of freedom and Dream. Exactly before his death, Roger announced to the international community that One Piece, his treasue, is still there in the laugh tale. This declaration was responsible for a call to 1000s to join the pirate arena and therefore marking the start of the Great Pirate Era and his name was given the title “King” for this age of anarchy and thrill.
Bond Between Garp and Roger
Roger even left the safety of his unborn child under the care of Portgas D. Rouge, Ace maternal parentage. He instructed her to conceal the birth of their child because the World Government would go after his lineage after his death.
For the ensuring of Ace, Rouge was so determined to see her pregnancy through to its full term for 20 months that she died in the process but birthed Ace in secret. The last words of Roger were said to Monkey D. Garp, Marine Vice Admiral, and Roger’s enemy for a long time before his execution. These two characters have quite an adversarial dynamic in the novel, but Roger has a lot of regard for Garp – he knows he is honorable. Roger relied on Garp for the protection of the child because the latter had the good-natured conscience to take care of the baby given its parentage. This request was met by Garp by raising Ace to become his own grandson in secret giving him a shot at life.
Death of Gol D Roger - The man who smiled to his death
Gol D. Roger died by public execution in Loguetown his birthplace according to his wish by the world government. But his death was not of punishment alone; it transformed into a turning point in the One Piece universe- The Great Pirate Era. Roger was critically ill at the time and realized that he did not have too much time left in his life. He also dismissed the Roger Pirates so he could be on his own, while the rest of the crew could live as they please without being chased after.
Immortal King of The Pirate World
At least, the World Government wanted to make an example out of Roger by executing him for piracy, but instead they got what they deserved. These last words created a worldwide trend of piracy, and countless people are in Search of One Piece and want to become Pirates like him.
It should be noted that during his execution Roger did not cry for mercy, did not act afraid. He simply smiled and spoke to the people who had come to watch him die. Gol D. Roger died not only to cease his life, but to start a new era, hence, he is even more legendary in death more than he was in life.
