Solo Leveling is a top-performing modern anime series trending among fans with its fast-paced action, overly powerful main character, and unorthodox leveling system. Many fans of anime and manga have observed this, but it points to some homages Solo Leveling may be an adaptation and homage to the beloved series Hunter x Hunter. Was Solo Leveling inspired by the work of master creator Yoshihiro Togashi? There are a lot of similarities between these two shows.
Concept of Hunters and Hunter’s Association
One of the more obvious similarities is that of “Hunters.” Hunter Professionals in Hunter x Hunter travel to unsafe territories, fight powerful monsters, and break cases for power, information, or money. Hunters in Solo Leveling are also the same, traveling into dangerous dungeons crawling with monsters and riches. Both shows have a system of hierarchy in which powerful Hunters become more famous, desirable, and affluent, all revolving around power and progression.

The Dungeon Concept and Perils of Expeditions
Both series focus on venturing into dangerous, unknown territories. In Solo Leveling, dungeons burst forth suddenly, and Hunters must destroy them before they invade the mortal plane. In Hunter x Hunter, Greed Island, the Chimera Ant nest, and the Dark Continent are risk-prone battlegrounds of survival. These lands usually consist of unimaginable danger, require cautious coordination, brute force, and intelligence to overcome.

Power System: Nen and Magic
The system of power, nonetheless, in Solo Leveling is quite akin to that of Hunter x Hunter’s Nen system. Nen is a deep and open power system where people develop their personalized abilities based on personality and training. There are also diverse Hunter classes in Solo Leveling, with particular skills that define their fighting capability. Jinwoo’s potential to increase in strength, skill up, and summon creatures is akin to the development-oriented Nen, wherein a user’s strength is his ability to master his skills.

Shadow Army and Chimera Ants
Jinwoo’s power to bring dead individuals back as his loyal Shadow Army is akin to the Chimera Ants in Hunter x Hunter. The Ants, under Meruem, can revive killed enemies as extremely powerful comrades in a similar fashion to Jinwoo’s ability to bring back the corpses of beasts that can be used as his troops. Aside from that, both the power and status of Shadow Monarch in leading an army are comparable to the Ants’ Chimera Ant kingdom position in which the elites control monolithic armies composed of minions of monstrous rank.

Guilds and Hunter Associations
Both series have structured systems that govern their world’s powerhouses. The guilds and the Hunter Association govern and police Hunters in Solo Leveling, giving them missions and classifying them based on strength. In Hunter x Hunter, there is the Hunter Association, which filters and licenses Hunters and imposes peace. Both are a governing system that patrols the world’s strongest warriors and maintains balance among them.

The Idea of an Isolated World
Both shows have the element of there being more in their worlds than initially believed. In Solo Leveling, how large the reality of Monarchs and Rulers is only learned over time as Jinwoo gets stronger. For Hunter x Hunter, the presence of still another continent and yet-unknown threats in the same manner suggests that there is just that much more to this world than the rest of humankind used to know. This resonance of the discovery of then-hidden threats and vast powers beyond the awareness of humankind is an overextending parallel between the two series.

Though Solo Leveling and Hunter x Hunter do have a lot in common, it is hard to determine with absolute certainty that Solo Leveling was based on the work of Togashi. All of the stuff that looks similar in Solo Leveling, for example, power systems, dungeon-type missions, and unstoppable main characters, is typical fantasy and action genre fare. All the same, with Hunter x Hunter’s impact on contemporary manga, manhwa, and webtoons, it would not be anachronistic for Solo Leveling to take a few things from it. Coincidental or not, the similarities, Hunter x Hunter fans will enjoy Solo Leveling for its straightforward fight scenes, solid power system, and deep character development.
